Competition Guidelines

The competition is open to all instrumentalists and vocalists residing in the U.S. between the
  ages of 8 to 20 at the time of the competition.


EXTENDED Application Deadline:  Postmarked by February 21, 2012 
Application Fee:           $65.  Fee is non-refundable No Certified or Registered Mail, please.
Live Audition date:      Sunday, March 11, 2012*

               Corrigan Hall at Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ

 * We recommend live audition; however, students who reside outside of the Tri-State area or who have scheduling conflicts may send a DVD with the application form postmarked by February 15, 2012.  Please label DVD with student’s name and repertoire selection. A copy of the music must accompany DVD.  The performance must be complete and with accompanist if required in the score.  Incomplete performances will be disqualified.  DVD cannot be returned.

Repertoire Requirements

  • One complete selection from the standard solo repertoire (Baroque, Classical, Romantic,
    Impressionist, Contemporary) not to exceed 7 minutes in total length. Students must perform from memory the solo selection in its entirety.  Cuts in the solo section (including cadenza of a concerto) will results in disqualification.  A cut in the accompaniment section is allowed, and in fact, is encouraged. 
  • Students who audition with pieces exceeding the time limit of 7 minutes will not be stopped by timers. However, if selected as Grand Winners, students must pay the extended winners’ fee.  

 Note: Under no circumstances, will we accept any pieces longer than 10 minutes 1 second.

  • No simplified arrangements will be accepted. No instrumental and piano collaboration sonatas/sonatinas are allowed. No repeats unless they affect the integrity of the piece.
  • A movement of a piano sonata/sonatina will count as one selection. A movement of a Suite will also be acceptable. Theme and variations are to be played in their complete form.
  • For piano, both Prelude and Fugue from WTC must be played in order to count as one piece.
  • Original music must be presented to judges.  No photo copies will be allowed.
  • Concertos must be performed with piano reduction of the orchestral parts.  Please minimize piano accompaniment interludes.
  • Instrumentalists/vocalists must provide own accompanist for both competition and for the concert, if selected.
  • No changes of repertoire once submitted.
  • Judges’ decisions are final.
  • Grand, Gold, and Silver winners will be awarded.  Grand winners will perform at Weill Recital Hall. Gold and Silver winners will receive certificates.

 

Grand Winners Concert

  • Grand Winners’ Concert Date:  Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 1:00 p.m.
  • Grand Winners’ Concert place:  Weill Recital Hall-Carnegie Hall, New York, NY
  • Standard Winners’ fee:  $185 which includes 5 tickets, trophies, and certificates
  • Extended Winners’ fee: $ 370  which includes 10 tickets, trophies, and certificates
  • Grand Winners must perform at the Winner's Concert in order to receive awards or they will forfeit their status.  


Dress Code  

  • Proper concert attire is required for both the competition and the winners’ concert.
