COMPETITION GUIDELINES

Audition Date:            Sunday, May 13, 2012
Audition Place:           Lile Hall at Christ Church Summit, NJ


Concert Date:              Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.
Concert Place:             Alumni Theater, Caldwell College

 

This competition is offered every two years and is open to students who are capable of preparing a high quality recital program of 25-35 minutes. (Please see the repertoire requirement and guidelines below).

There is no age minimum but a maximum age is 18 years of age at the time of the competition. The competition is open to Brass, Woodwind, Strings, Piano, Voice, Marimba/Vibraphone, and Percussion.

The competition will have two categories:
Junior: up to 14 years
Senior: 15 to 18 years

A maximum of six winners will be selected to perform in the Winners' Concert. The winners will perform two pieces that judges have chosen from the competition. All winners will receive monetary awards. Following the concert, one grand winner will be chosen by the panel of judges. In addition, one audience prize will be awarded by audience vote. Previous winners of the Virtuosi Competition are not eligible to enter. Winners must perform at the Winner's Concert in order to receive awards or they will forfeit their status.

Students who reside outside of the Tri-State area or who have scheduling conflicts have an option to submit a DVD by the deadline date.

 

REPERTOIRE GUIDELINES:
BRASS, WOODWIND

  • A well-balanced recital program of minimum 25 minutes to maximum of 35 minutes
  • The program must include at least two different musical periods (Baroque,Classical,Romantic,
    Impressionistic,Contemporary)
  • No repeats unless the piece affect the integrity of the piece
  • Variations must be performed in their entirety
  • One movement of concerto and/or sonata is acceptable
  • Memorization preferred
  • Piano accompaniment is required except when it is not a part of the composition. Concertos
    must be performed with piano reduction of the orchestral parts. Please minimize piano
    accompaniment interludes.
  • Performers must provide own accompanist.


STRINGS

  • A Well-balanced recital program of minimum 25 minutes to maximum of 35 minutes
  • The program must include at least two different musical periods (Baroque,Classical,Romantic,
    Impressionistic,Contemporary)
  • No repeats unless the piece affect the integrity of the piece
  • Variations must be performed in their entirety
  • One movement of concerto and/or sonata is acceptable
  • All compositions must be performed from memory except for duo sonatas. Memorization of music
    since 1939 is encouraged but optional.
  • Piano accompaniment is required except when it is not a part of the composition. Concertos
    must be performed with piano reduction of the orchestral parts. Please minimize piano
    accompaniment interludes.
  • Performers must provide own accompanist for both audition and concert, if selected.


PIANO

  • A well-balanced recital program of minimum 25 minutes to maximum of 35 minutes
  • The program must include at least two different musical periods (Baroque,Classical,Romantic,
    Impressionistic,Contemporary)
  • A movement of sonata is acceptable.
  • No repeats unless the piece affect the integrity of the piece.
  • Variations must be performed in their entirety.
  • Transcriptions are allowed
  • Memorization is required for all repertoire
  • No concerto repertoire


VOICE

  • A recital program of minimum 15 minutes to maximum 20 minutes.
  • The program should be designed as performing in different languages, which must include:

Italian art songs or arias from 17th century or 18th century
Art songs in English (not a translation)
Songs in German OR French.

  • Memorization required.
  • Performers must provide own accompanist for both audition and concert, if selected.


MARIMBA / VIBRAPHONE

  • A well-balanced recital program of minimum 20 minutes to maximum 25 minutes
  • The program must include the following:

One music from the Baroque period
At least one music using four mallets

  • Memorization required
  • Performers must provide own accompanist for both audition and concert, if selected.


PERCUSSION

  • A well-balanced recital program of minimum 20 minutes to maximum 25 minutes
  • The program must include the following:

One or more percussion solo music
At least one multi-percussion music

  • Memorization required.
  • Performers must provide own accompanist for both audition and concert, if selected.
