GUIDELINES

The competition is open to all solo instruments between the ages of 8 to 19 at the time of the competition.

Application Fee: $100 per participant Fee is non-refundable.

Winners Concert Fee $300 per person* which includes 4 tickets, certificates and trophies.

*An additional fee of $100 must be paid if the piece exceeds the time limit. The maximum time limit is 9 minutes. See below*

Winners’ Fees must be paid at the time of registration. The winners’ fee will not be returned if selected as a winner. Winners must perform at the Winner's Concert in order to receive awards or they will forfeit their status.

Additional ticket is $65 each.

One selection or a collection of pieces (from the same opus or suite) from the standard solo repertoire (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionist, and Contemporary)   A movement of a sonata/sonatina will count as one selection. Theme and variations are to be played in their complete form.  No simplified arrangements will be accepted. No repeats unless they affect the integrity of the piece but must be within the time limit.

  • Memorization is required on all pieces.

  • Maximum time limit is 8 minutes 1 second. 

  • *If the selected music exceeds 8 minutes and 1 second, we may accept up to one additional minute, making a total of 9 minutes, only with the prior approval of the NLPA Competition Committee and an additional winner’s fee of $100 which must be submitted at the time of registration. Performers will be disqualified if their piece exceeds 9 minutes (both Live and YouTube). A timer will also be present during the live audition to keep track of the piece’s duration. Please choose your repertoire carefully. If any questions, please contact NLPA.

  • For piano entries, both Prelude and Fugue from WTC must be played to qualify as one piece.  A movement of a piano sonata/sonatina will count as one selection.  No concerto repertoire.

  • For non-piano instruments, concerto repertoire is allowed.  However, cuts in the solo section (including a cadenza of a concerto) will results in disqualification.  A concerto must be performed with a piano accompanist using piano reduction of the orchestral score.  Please minimize accompaniment interludes.   Cadenza of a concerto must be included.  Cuts in the accompaniment or tutti score are strongly encouraged.  Any questions, please contact NLPA.

  • It is the instrumentalists’/vocalists’ responsibility to provide their own accompanist for both the competition and for the concert or will be disqualified.  If an accompanist is needed, we can provide a list of names.

  • Concert Performance Restriction: Grand, Gold and Silver Winners will perform only the piece performed at the competition

 

Live Audition Entry Guidelines:

  • Competition schedule will be sent via email with detail instructions.

  • All students must bring a copy of the music or the original book.

Dress Code 

  • Proper concert attire is required for both the competition and the winners’ concert.
